ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a natural, safe, and time-tested therapy that treats a very wide range of conditions. Acupuncture works on different levels according to what is being treated –

- it can target the more superficial aspects of the body, the muscles and tendons, and help heal tissues and resolve injuries, aches, and pains.

- It can affect the internal organs and hormones and improve organ function and homeostasis.

- It can also work on a mental-emotional level and help create changes in mood and temperament.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of hair-thin, sterile needles into the body to activate special receptors which communicate with the central nervous, endocrine and cardiovascular systems resulting in the release of natural pain-killing substances and dilation of blood vessels delivering oxygen and nutrient-rich blood, hormones and immune factors to sick areas of the body. In a nutshell, acupuncture boosts blood-flow and the release of the body's intrinsic healing chemicals.

From a traditional perspective acupuncture works by seeking to establish balance and homeostasis throughout body and mind. It is based on holistic principles that recognise an intimate link between the health of the physical body with the state of the mind and balance of emotion. Treatment is both given to help alleviate suffering and as a preventative medicine. As such, people often report not only improvement in disease symptoms, but also feel much better in themselves and as a whole.

Many millions of people have used acupuncture to date. Often people seek an acupuncturist for chronic pain and health problems that haven’t responded to conventional medicines. The NIH, NHS, and World Health Organisation have all given formal approval of certain uses of acupuncture. Many medical doctors believe acupuncture to be efficacious and recommend it for a wide range of pain and illness.

Alex is fully licensed and practices a safe, gentle, and effective form of acupuncture. He has a BSc. in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Kingston University and has completed a clinical internship at Vietnam’s largest acupuncture hospital in Saigon, and post-grad trainings with many of the world’s top acupuncturists and healers.

DIEN CHAN FACIAL REFLEXOLOGY

Dien Chan is a Vietnamese system of facial reflexology. Based on a recognition that the face is deeply connected to many aspects of our health, Dien Chan specializes in mapping out these connections and harnessing them for healing and rejuvenation.

Dien Chan is unique in that it has identified over 300 individual points on the face, all with specific actions on different aspects of the body and mind. Much of the physical, mental, and emotional stress that we carry, which negatively impacts all aspects of our health, is held in our face and our expression. Dien Chan treatments use advanced massage techniques to release this tension and stress from the head, neck and face, which then creates a positive cascade effect throughout the body. A number of massage tools have been specially designed to aid in this process.

Treatments are tailored to the individual, and can either be used for general well-being and relaxation, or for addressing health imbalances. Dien Chan works on many layers- it has a soothing and balancing effect on the nervous system, it helps harmonize the hormonal system, reduces inflammation, boosts immunity and detox, and also can affect and release mental- emotional patterns. As such, treatments can benefit and assist in healing many illnesses, especially with people coping with stress and fatigue, sleeping issues, blood pressure imbalance, headaches and pain, poor digestion or hormonal imbalances. It also greatly boosts circulation to all the tissues of the face, which promotes a healthy, glowing complexion and so could be thought of as a natural facelift.

HEALING MASSAGE

Alex is highly skilled in a number of different kinds of massage. His original training is Tui-Na (Chinese Therapeutic Massage), which specifically targets and releases physical tension and pain conditions. Tui-Na can either be very strong and intense (Yang style) or very subtle and energetic (Yin style), according to the individual needs. It is sometimes called needle-free acupuncture or acupressure, as it uses the same principles and pressure points as acupuncture.

Each massage session is tailored to your needs and can focus on different levels or aspects of the body/mind. Full body massage is best for general health and stress relief. If you are suffering from a specific injury or tension/pain, treatment can focus on remedying this part of the body. Massage sessions are usually given fully-clothed, so it is recommended to bring or wear loose comfortable clothing. In some circumstances special herbal oils or balms are used. In the treatment of physical tension, pain, and injuries, postural exercises, stretches and qigong are recommended to sustain the effects of the treatment and act as a form of self-healing.

Alex has undertaken personal training with a master in traditional Thai massage, May Raksakun, who has a renowned practice in Koh Phangaan. Thai massage works best as a full-body massage and can be used therapeutically or for relaxation and stress-release. It includes the use of yoga-like stretches that open the body more fully than most massage techniques.

Alex has also studied for many years from Dr. Nguyen Viet Nga, a master healer who has developed her own style of Vietnamese acupressure, meditation, and qigong. Now semi-retired, she was the head teacher and director of the Institute of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine in Saigon for many years. She is also a renowned practitioner of Wing Chun Kung-Fu.

Alex has also learnt different forms of abdominal massage (Traditional Mayan and Taoist), which are particularly helpful for emotional health, digestive health, and infertility. Foot, Hand, Face and Abdominal reflexology are incorporated into treatments as needed.
